# How to Prepare for Your Testosterone Blood Test

## How to Prepare for Your Testosterone Blood Test

Getting your testosterone levels checked is an important first step in understanding your hormone health.

At Apex TRT, we use blood tests alongside your symptoms and medical history to get a clearer picture of your health and determine whether further investigation or treatment may be appropriate.

Whether you're having your first blood test or regular blood tests as part of your ongoing care, preparing properly helps ensure your results are as accurate as possible.

Here's what you need to know before your blood test.

## When should I have my blood test?

For the most consistent results, aim to have your blood test:

- **Before 10 am**, ideally between 8 am and 10 am
- **Fasted for 8–12 hours**, with no food or drinks other than plain water
- **Well hydrated**, by drinking water as normal before your appointment

These are the standard preparation instructions for Apex TRT blood tests, unless your doctor has advised otherwise.

### What if I'm already receiving TRT?

If you're already receiving treatment and having your regular blood tests, timing is also important.

For patients whose monitoring requires a trough blood test, this means having your blood taken just before your next scheduled dose, at the end of the time between doses.

This helps your medical team assess your testosterone levels consistently throughout your ongoing care.

Always follow your prescribed treatment schedule and any specific blood collection instructions provided by your doctor.

## Do I need to fast before my blood test?

For your Apex TRT blood tests, you should generally fast for 8–12 hours before your appointment, unless you've been given different instructions.

Fasting means you shouldn't eat or drink anything other than plain water during this time.

### Can I drink water?

Yes. Drink water as normal and stay well hydrated before your blood test.

### Can I have coffee?

No. If you're fasting, avoid coffee, tea, energy drinks and other beverages until after your blood test. Stick to plain water.

## Can I exercise before my blood test?

It's best to avoid strenuous exercise immediately before your blood test, as intense physical activity can temporarily affect some blood markers.

If possible, schedule your gym session or workout for after your blood collection.

Normal everyday activities are generally fine.

## Can I take my usual medications and supplements?

Most regular medications can be continued before a blood test, but some medicines and supplements may affect your results or require specific instructions.

Make sure your doctor is aware of any medications or supplements you're taking.

Don't stop or change prescribed medication unless your doctor tells you to.

If you're already receiving TRT, follow the blood collection timing instructions provided as part of your treatment plan.

## What if I'm sick or haven't slept well?

Being unwell or having significantly disrupted sleep can affect testosterone levels and other blood test results.

If you're sick or recovering from an illness, it may be better to postpone your blood test until you've recovered.

Similarly, if you've had unusually poor sleep, your testosterone results may not reflect your usual levels.

For initial testosterone testing, aim to have your blood taken when you're feeling well and have had a normal night's sleep.

## Where do I go for my blood test?

Once your pathology referral is ready, we'll send it directly to your phone.

You can then visit a participating Sonic Healthcare pathology collection centre near you to have your blood taken.

Find your nearest Sonic HealthPlus collection centre to check locations and opening hours.

The blood collection itself is straightforward. A trained pathology collector takes a sample from your arm and sends it to the laboratory for testing.

## What should I bring to my appointment?

Before leaving for your blood test, make sure you have:

- Your pathology referral, available on your phone
- Any identification requested by the collection centre
- A list of medications or supplements you're taking, if requested
- Water and something to eat afterwards if you've been fasting

Wear something comfortable that allows easy access to your arm.

## Why might I need two testosterone blood tests?

Testosterone levels can vary from day to day, so one result doesn't always give your doctor the full picture.

At Apex TRT, your first test is a comprehensive blood panel covering more than 45 biomarkers. This helps assess your testosterone levels and other important aspects of your health.

If your initial results indicate low testosterone, we may arrange a second, smaller blood test to confirm your levels.

These results are considered alongside your symptoms, medical history and overall health to determine the appropriate next steps.

## What happens after my blood test?

### If you're having your initial testosterone assessment

Your results are sent to our clinical team for review.

If further testing is needed, we'll contact you by email with instructions on what happens next.

Once your testing is complete, we'll let you know the outcome and whether a doctor consultation about TRT is appropriate.

If your results don't indicate a need for TRT, we'll explain the outcome and what options are available.

### If you're already receiving TRT

Your blood results are reviewed as part of your ongoing care.

You'll have scheduled reviews to discuss your results, how you're feeling and whether your treatment is working as intended.

If any changes to your treatment are needed, your medical team will explain the next steps.
