Frequently Asked Questions
What is the process to get started?
Getting started is straightforward. Complete a short online Pre-screening so we can understand your symptoms.
You can then book a free consultation to ask questions, understand the process, and be guided through the next steps. This includes completing a medical questionnaire and receiving pathology requests at no extra cost.
If suitable, you will proceed to a telehealth consultation with an AHPRA-registered doctor. Prescriptions are issued via eScript and can be filled at any pharmacy across Australia. Compounding options are also available through our partnered pharmacy.
Do I need a blood test before starting?
A blood test is required before starting testosterone replacement therapy. Blood tests confirm whether testosterone levels are clinically low and assess other markers used to determine suitability for treatment.
You do not need a blood test to complete the pre-screening or to book your free initial consultation. When required, Apex TRT organises all pathology testing and provides free pathology as part of your care.
What can I expect in the free initial consultation?
This is a relaxed, no-pressure chat with one of our care consultants. We’ll discuss your symptoms, bloodwork and goals, answer your questions and explain our treatment options.
Will I speak with a real doctor?
Yes – Following your initial consultation, you will have a telehealth consultation with an Australian-licensed doctor. The doctor will review your case, assess your pathology results and confirm a tailored treatment plan, where appropriate.
Can I access your services online?
Yes – No long wait times with referrals and inconvenient trips to clinics.
Our services can be accessed easily from the comfort of your home via our online & telehealth care structure.
What types of treatments are available?
We offer the most preferred methods of injectable & compound cream options. Injectable testosterone can be administered either intramuscularly or subcutaneously.
These are proven, clinically effective options that men find convenient and reliable.
Our doctors determine which method is best suited for you, with consideration for medical history, lifestyle and treatment goals.
Is TRT a lifelong treatment?
TRT is generally a long-term treatment. If you’ve been diagnosed with clinically low testosterone (hypogonadism), it means your body isn’t producing enough on its own. In most cases, this doesn’t “fix itself,” so ongoing treatment is needed to maintain healthy levels and manage symptoms.
How long before I start feeling the benefits of TRT?
Everyone responds differently, but most men report noticing improvements in energy, mood, libido and focus within a few short weeks.
The full benefits of TRT gradually continue to compound over time, with considerable improvements experienced over the course of coming months.
What happens if I stop treatment?
If you stop TRT, your testosterone will likely return to pre-treatment levels over time.
The symptoms you experienced prior to treatment are likely to return, so it’s important to discuss any changes with your doctor first.
Can I travel with my medication?
Yes – Your TRT medication can be taken with you when you travel. It’s recommended that you carry it in its original packaging, with your name on it issued by the pharmacy.
While customs in most countries do not require it, our doctors are able to issue you with a travel statement confirming treatment.
How much does TRT cost in Australia?
The cost of TRT depends on your treatment plan and prescribed medication. At Apex TRT, we offer a free consultation and transparent pricing so you know exactly what to expect before starting.
Does Medicare or private health insurance cover TRT?
Apex TRT operates as a private clinic and does not directly bill Medicare.
However, pathology testing arranged as part of your care is covered through Medicare, and eligible Medicare rebates may apply to doctor consultations, depending on your circumstances.
Some private health insurers may also offer rebates for certain aspects of care. We recommend speaking directly with your nominated health insurer to confirm what may be covered under your policy.
Do I need a prescription to access TRT?
Yes – TRT is a prescription-only treatment in Australia. Our licensed doctors will assess your blood tests, symptoms and medical history before issuing any prescriptions.
Is TRT legal in Australia?
Yes – TRT is legal in Australia when prescribed by a licensed doctor. Our treatment plans are overseen by Australian-registered medical practitioners, ensuring your treatment is fully compliant with regulations and legislative requirements.
How do prescriptions work?
TRT is prescription-only in Australia. Once treatment is approved by your doctor, you’ll receive an eScript that can be filled at a pharmacy of your choice anywhere in Australia.
For patients requiring compounded medication, prescriptions can be filled through selected partnered compounding pharmacy.
Are there any side effects of TRT?
What if I experience side effects?
If you experience side effects, your doctor can adjust your dosage or treatment plan. In most cases, side effects are minor and disappear over the initial weeks of beginning treatment.
Is TRT safe long-term?
Yes – when prescribed by a licensed doctor and monitored correctly, TRT is considered safe for long-term use.
The FDA issued class-wide labelling changes for testosterone products, removing the black box warning about an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes. This change follows the results of the TRAVERSE trial, which indicated no increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
Can TRT affect fertility?
TRT can lower sperm production in some men. If you’re planning to have children, it’s important to discuss this with your doctor before starting treatment. There are treatment options available to help support fertility alongside TRT.
Can I be on TRT if I have other medical conditions?
Many men with existing health conditions are on TRT, but it depends on your individual circumstances. Your doctor will review your medical history and overall health to decide if treatment is appropriate. Our care team will also support you with ongoing reviews if treatment is approved.
How do I receive my TRT medication?
Once treatment is approved, your doctor will issue an electronic prescription (eScript). You can fill this prescription at any pharmacy across Australia.
If a compounded medication is recommended, this can be arranged through a selected partner compounding pharmacy.
What is a compounded medication?
Compounded medications are prepared by specialist pharmacies to meet specific clinical requirements. In some cases, your doctor may recommend a compounded option as part of your treatment plan.
Can TRT help with weight loss?
TRT isn’t prescribed as a weight loss treatment, but many men report noticing changes in body composition once their testosterone levels are balanced. Increased energy, improved mood, and better recovery from exercise can make it easier to stay active and maintain a healthy weight.
Does TRT increase muscle mass?
Most men find it easier to build or maintain muscle once testosterone levels are restored. Combined with regular resistance training and proper nutrition, TRT can support lean muscle development.
Does TRT improve sleep quality?
Low testosterone is often linked with poor sleep. While TRT isn’t a direct sleep treatment, men often report improved energy regulation, reduced fatigue, and better sleep quality once their hormone levels are normalised.
Can I drink alcohol while on TRT?
Moderate alcohol consumption is generally safe, but heavy drinking can negatively impact testosterone levels, overall health, and treatment effectiveness. It’s best to keep alcohol intake within healthy limits and discuss your habits with your doctor.
Can TRT help with anxiety or depression?
TRT may improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression or anxiety in men with clinically low testosterone. However, it’s not a stand-alone treatment for mental health conditions. If you’re struggling, it’s important to seek broader medical and psychological support alongside TRT.
